Most dog owners do not think about their dog's teeth. . .until they find their pet chewing on something they shouldn't! It is important to remember that puppies and young dogs need something with resistance to gnaw on. This helps their teeth and jaws develop properly. Puppies, especially, need something to chew on. Chewing helps them cut their puppy teeth and induces the growth of their permanent teeth. Chewing also helps a puppy lose its teeth at the proper time and makes it easier for their permanent teeth to cut through the gums. Adult dogs like to chew because it is a form of gum massage, teeth cleaning, and jaw exercise. Teeth cleaning is especially important for dogs--they can have tartar and build-up on their teeth, just as we do. In fact, dogs seem to accumulate tartar more quickly than humans. Since Siberian Huskies aren't adept at brushing and flossing between meals and at bedtime, they have no other option but to chew on something. Most Huskies do not mean any harm--and should not be perceived as mischievous--when they are caught chewing on a forbidden object. You should take special care to provide your Husky with suitable outlets for chewing. The Northern Manor encourages you to keep the viewpoint of your Siberian Husky in mind when choosing bones or chew toys. While you may want it to be functional and safe, your Husky may want it to be interesting and tasty! As always, have your Husky's mouth checked at least once a year by a veterinarian to ensure it is as healthy as it should be.
